When Susan Townsend discovers the body of her neighbour Louise North with that of a man who had been coming to see her, it seems a tragic end to a furtive, suburban affair. Tongues had been wagging in the cul-de-sac for weeks, though of course no one expected the kitchen fitter to shoot his lover and then take his own life out of despair.
