1960s, East Coast of New Zealand. Two Maori sheep-shearing families, the Mahanas and Poatas, are longstanding enemies and commercial rivals. 14 year-old Simeon Mahana, the youngest son, is in conflict with his traditionalist grandfather, Tamihana.
