Carmichael's 1000 : their triumphs and their trials : a history of the 36th Battalion AIF

"A history of the 36th Australian Infantry Battalion, AIF, formed in New South Wales and later served in France during some of the most important battles of World War One. This book tells their story, based on the unit diaries and the letters and journals of the men. Together, they paint a graphic picture of their journey from Australia, their training on Salisbury Plain and their engagement on the battlefields of France. In April 1918 the newspapers rang out the news that the 36th Battalion had played a part in halting the German advance in front of the town of Villers Bretonneux. Yet just three weeks later the Battalion was among one of three to be disbanded. No more reinforcements could be found in Australia to fill the gaps caused by the casualties in the battles at Messines Ridge, the Oostaverne Line, Broodseinde and Passchendaele in 1917 and the spring campaign of 1918. Illustrated with photographs and maps, some of which have never previously been published, this book covers in depth the battles in which the men of the 36th Battalion had fought and where so many had died bravely." -- book cover.
